Build your tree

Add people right on the tree —parents, children, partners— and gather their dates, photos and stories in no time.

Already have it in another program? Upload it as a GEDCOM file and carry on from there.

Write your family’s story

Anecdotes, memories, recipes, the story of a whole branch: the things only told around the table after a meal, and lost once nobody is left to tell them. Write them down with their photos and link to the people in them, so every story stays with its people.

You decide whether it shows up on Google or stays in the family.

Follow the family across the map

A wedding, a move, the boat to Buenos Aires. Every event you add, with its date and place, grows the family map: where they settled, when they moved and how far they went.

Filter with the timeline and see what happened in any period: where everyone was the year your grandfather was born, or who left during the war.

Photos, where they belong

Get the photos out of the shoebox and sort them into albums: “The ’55 wedding”, “Cuba”, “Summers in the village”. Tag who’s in each photo and it will show up on their profile too. Then search by person, by year or by decade.

The free plan fits 200 in the gallery, not counting the tree’s portraits. With the Family plan, 2,000. Family plan

A print for the wall

From the tree to a poster: you choose who’s in it, the style of the cards, the colors, the frame and the paper, and download it ready to print. With the timeline alongside, if you want to show what happened each year. The kind of gift that ends up on the wall.

Questions

Is it really free?

Yes. One tree with as many people as you like, its site with posts, map, timeline and gallery, and taking it with you in GEDCOM, without ever paying. You pay for the extras: inviting others to edit, more trees and more photos, and high-quality downloads. See pricing.

Can I bring the tree I already have in another program?

Yes, as a GEDCOM file (.ged), which MyHeritage, Ancestry, Gramps, FamilySearch and almost any genealogy program can export. Before bringing it in, it tells you how many people it contains. Photos don’t travel in GEDCOM: those are uploaded separately. How to get it out of each program.

Who can see my living relatives?

Whoever you like. A tree starts out private, and even if you make it public you can keep anyone private: outside your trees, neither their name nor their photo appears. Minors are always private, without you having to do anything.

Where is my data kept? Do you sell it?

On our server, at Hostinger, with encrypted backups at Hetzner, in Germany. We don’t sell or hand over your data, there’s no advertising and there are no tracking cookies. The full privacy policy.

What if 1199 closes one day?

You don’t have to wait for that to take it with you: from your account you can download a copy of everything that’s yours whenever you like, with the photos and albums, and the data in GEDCOM, which any genealogy program can open.

Start with whoever you remember.

Your parents, your grandparents, the name that came up at family dinners. The rest will follow.
